Coach Johnson

Coach Johnson grew up in Cleveland, Arkansas where he graduated from Wonderview High School.  He received his bachelor’s degree from Williams Baptist University and his Masters from Arkansas State.  Coach Johnson played collegiately for four years and led the team in scoring two of those years.  After college he was the Assistant Varsity Coach and JV head coach at Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau, MO.  He coached five years at Cape but wanted to get closer to home, so he accepted a coaching position at Conway Jr. High in Conway, AR.  Eight seasons of 7A Central Jr. High basketball and five in the SEMO Missouri conference, helped prepare him for the role as Head Basketball Coach at Conway High School.  After just three years and three state appearances, he resigned for a family move to Pittsburgh, PA.  Upon leaving Pennsylvania, Coach and his family transitioned to the KC area which is where his wife, Brandy, of 16 years is from.  They have three kids, Ella 12, Norah 10, and William 4.  Coach Johnson is the Elementary PE Teacher at Stilwell Elementary.  He loves to train and develop athletes and is looking forward to working with Coach Loechner, the staff, and the team in his first year at BVSW.

Coach Leochner grew up in Hutchinson Kansas and graduated from Buhler High School before attending Hutchinson Community College.  Upon graduation from HCC, Coach Leochner attended the University of Kansas where he earned both his bachelors and masters degrees in middle/secondary education and curriculum and instruction.  Coach Leochner began his coaching and teaching career at Southwest Junior High School in Lawrence Kansas where he led the 9th grade girls and 8th grade boys teams for two years.  He then made the transition to Free State High School in 2003 as the junior varsity girls coach for 3 seasons.  Coach Leochner helped turn a struggling program into a perennial Sunflower League contender and in his final year with the girls program they made their first of many trips to the state tournament under head coach Bryan Duncan.  Coach Leochner then joined the boys program at Free State as the assistant head coach for the 2006-07 season.  That year’s team finished 3rd at the Kansas class 6A state tournament.  After a 5 year stint as the assistant head coach at Free State High School Coach Leochner took his first head coaching position at Baldwin High School in 2011.  Coach Leochner took over a program that had seen recent struggles and led them to 3 consecutive winning seasons and a combined record of 45-19.  In his final year Baldwin compiled an 18-4 record, winning the Frontier League and coming 2 points shy of a state tournament birth in class 4A Division I.

Coach Palmgren was born and raised in Olathe. After graduating from Olathe South High School, he attended Pittsburg State University where he studied Spanish Education. Coach Palmgren taught at Blue Valley West for the past five years until moving to Southwest this year. Coach Palmgren started coaching under Coach Rabbitt and this will be his 6th year coaching at Southwest. He has coached the Freshman teams, Sophomore, and this will be his third year at the JV level. For this upcoming year, Coach Palmgren is excited to coach the Junior Varsity team and looks forward to assisting the Varsity team. Along with being the JV coach, he is one of the coaches for our Wolf Pup youth program.

Coach Boren

Terry T. Boren is in his first year as sophomore boy’s basketball coach at Blue Valley Southwest. He just retired after 33 years as a sales executive in the financial services industry. Terry has 11 years of experience coaching high school boy’s basketball and one year of coaching at the college level. During that time he was head coach for 8 years including 5 years at Goddard High School, Goddard, KS. As a head coach his teams won 4 conference championships and during his 3 years as an assistant coach his teams captured conference titles in 2 of those years. He was an assistant at Salina Central High School, Salina, Ks. when the Mustangs won the state 5-A boy’s championship. After graduating from Wichita North and lettering his junior and senior year he played two years at St. John’s Junior College, Winfield, KS and finished his college career at Concordia University, Seward, NE.

Terry and his wife, Janet, both received their Master’s Degrees in Secondary Education at Ft. Hays State University, Hays, KS.

Terry and Janet have been married 42 years and their 2 daughters have blessed them with 6 grandchildren. They have been residents in Overland Park and patrons of the Blue Valley School District since 1991.

Coach Mathew

Coach Mathew is a native of Kansas City, Missouri, where he played high school basketball at the Varsity level. Coach Floyd received basketball scholarships from both Neosho Community College and Northern Arizona University where he earned his Bachelor Degree. Coach Floyd continued his education at University of Missouri at Kansas City where he earned his Masters Degree. Coach Floyd made All-Conference in the Big Sky conference at Northern Arizona University. Coach Floyd was also a NBA and ABA draftee in 1972. Coach Floyd has successfully coached at various competitive levels such as both boys and girls at the AAU level, middle school, and high school levels. For more 30 years,  Coach Floyd enjoyed a successful career in the corporate world  in the financial and the bank card industries. He was married to his high school sweetheart Nancy Mathew for 38 years before God called her home in 2016. Coach Floyd was blessed with four adult children and nine grandchildren.

Coach Horstick

Coach Horstick graduated from Central Heights High School and then from MidAmerica Nazarene University where he earned his degree in Athletic Training and Sports Management. His first coaching position was as the assistant girls basketball coach at Kansas City Christian School. He then went on to be the Head Coach for the same program. While at Kansas City Christian he also taught High School Personal Finance and Boys Health/PE. He will also starting his 4th season as an assistant coach for the baseball team at KCC this spring. He is currently the Kids Activities Assistant Manager at Lifetime Fitness in Overland Park, KS. He lives in Olathe, KS with his wife, Jessica Horstick and their dogs, Hosmer and Nala.
